His Stuff

When faced with fact that everything I will be using and wearing for the next year or so had to fit within a 70 liter rip-stop fabric bag, I had one emotion…elation.  After years of trying to find matching dress socks and making sure I didn’t wear the same tie in the past week, only having two pairs of pants to choose from couldn’t be a more welcomed thought.

Overall, my approach to packing and culling down my list focused primarily on weight.  Being a moderately active guy and measuring in at a little over 6 feet tall, I figured I could comfortably carry about 40 pounds with a little to spare for odds and ends we pick up along the way.   Keeping that bogey in the back of my mind, I used the Noah’s ark approach starting with two of each item (shirts, pants, shorts, undies, shoes, etc.) then adding luxuries until I tipped the scale.

In terms of how I chose specific items- when it came to gear, electronics, or misc. accessories I splurged for the lightest option available.  When choosing clothing, it had to dry fast, be lightweight, and preferably be engineered to minimize odor retention.  The 21st century has truly been kind to travelers and it’s amazing what’s out there if you poke around the Internet a bit.

While terrifically unscientific, this strategy worked pretty well and proved decently efficient at getting me where I ultimately wanted to be – done packing.

So without further ado, here’s what made the cut…
